Applied anatomy of the cervical spine

چکیده

The atlas (Fig. 2) does not have a vertebral body – this has been absorbed into the axis vertebra, to form the odontoid process (Fig. 3). A thick anterior arch remains, extending into and joining the two lateral masses, on which are the superior atlantal joint facets, which articulate with the occipital condyles; and the inferior joint facets of the axis. The posterior arch is thinner than the anterior arch and forms the posterior junction of the lateral masses. The large vertebral foramen thus formed has a larger diameter in the transverse than in the sagittal plane. The transverse processes contain a transverse foramen through which the vertebral artery passes before it loops back above the upper surface of the posterior arch, which sometimes contains an arterial groove, although anatomical anomalies are frequently encountered. The posterior aspect of the anterior arch has a facet for articulation with the odontoid process of the axis, which is held in place by the transverse ligament, spanned between two tubercles, which project from the inner sides of the lateral masses.

Dysphagia Due to Anterior Cervical Spine Osteophyte: A Case Report

Introduction: Degenerative changes of the cervical spine are more common in elderly, but anterior cervical osteophytes that cause problems in swallowing are rare. The most common cause of this problem is DISH disease (diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis). Trauma is also suggested as a potential cause in osteophyte formation. Case Report: We report a rare case of anterior cervical osteop...

Predicting the Risk of Hearing Impairment Following the Cervical Spine Diseases by Measuring the Cervical Range of Movements: A Pilot Study

Introduction: Cervical spine abnormalities can affect the ear vessels and or nerves with different mechanisms. Ear dysfunctions following cervical spine injuries can be manifested as hearing loss, vertigo, or tinnitus. Usually, cervical spine injuries can cause pain and Range of Motion (ROM) limitation. The major objective of this study was to determine which cervical ROM limitation was accompa...

The Effect of Autogenous Fascia Relaxation and Spinal Mobility Exercise on Pain and Range of Motion in Elderly Female Patients with Chronic Back Pain

Background. Band exercise can also reduce back pain by reducing unnecessary movement of the thoracic and cervical vertebrae adjacent to the lumbar spine. Looking at previous studies, activation of the deep lumbar muscles of the lumbar spine and restoration of mobility of the adjacent skeleton have a positive effect on pain relief. Objectives. This study was to investigate the effects of self-f...
